Event Details
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
(ASIST) August 17 & 18, 2011
Description
Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course that includes teaching, discussion and videos. This training is recognized as a Best Practices skills based training through the National Suicide Prevention Resource Center and is used to train all volunteers through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK).
ASIST is an evidence based model that transforms knowledge and theory into operational tools. World-wide, over 950,000 people have been trained in ASIST, helping to create suicide-safer communities. ASIST was developed by LivingWorks.

This training provides suicide "first-aid" skills including; recognizing warning signs, maintaining safety, and assisting persons at risk in seeking further help. You will learn how to: recognize invitations for help, reach out and offer support, review the risk of suicide, apply a suicide intervention model and link people with community resources. Facilitated by Crisis Center of Tampa Bay certified ASIST trainers, this workshop will help caregivers confidently and competently intervene to assist individuals at risk of suicide.
ASIST's Five Learning Modules
-
Introduction - sets the tone, norms and expectations of the learning experience.
-
Attitudes - sensitizes participants to their own attitudes towards suicide and creates an understanding of the impact which attitudes have on the intervention process.
-
Knowledge - provides participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize and estimate the risk of suicide.
-
Intervention - presents a model for effective suicide intervention. Participants develop their skills through observation, supervised simulation experiences and role playing.
-
Resourcing/Networking - generates information about resources in the local community and promotes a commitment by participants to transform local resources into helping networks.
